Unrest in Kazakhstan continues after a week of protests leaves at least 164 dead

Live

Approximately 12,000 people have been detained as of Wednesday amid unrest in Kazakhstan, The Associated Press reports. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced in a press conference on Tuesday that the Russia-led peacekeepers in the country have completed their mission and will begin their withdrawal on January 13, according to local media. The peacekeepers were deployed following last week’s protests which killed at least 164 people, including three minors, according to the Ministry of Health. The protests began on January 2 after a sharp increase in fuel price and expanded to reflect criticism of the 30-year rule of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, the BBC reports.
