MSCHF Sold an Original Warhol Worth $20k By Hiding It In A Stack of 999 Forgeries

Live

Andy Warhol's 1954 work 'Fairies,' was copied exactly and no one knows which is the original. The art collective MSCHF calls this "destruction via duplication." The edition of 1000 sold out in minutes.

The real winner? MSCHF. If they sell all the sketches, they'll bring in about $250,000 of revenue.

An artist: (1) bought an Andy Warhol drawing for $20,000 (2) made 999 high-quality forgeries of it (3) shuffled them together (4) sold each of the 1,000 drawings for $250 each "If you pay your $250 maybe you’ll get the original $20,000 Warhol, but you’ll never know."

So many interesting legal questions. Brings up copyright (are the forgeries transformative?), trademark (the real Warhol is labeled as artist: MSCHF) and lottery law (there’s chance, consideration, and real Warhol is a prize, though-as designed-you don’t know it).

MSCHF, "Possibly Real Copy Of 'Fairies' by Andy Warhol" (2021). The group is selling a real Warhol alongside 999 identical, robotically produced forgeries, each for $250. No guarantees which one you will get.

I feel like Warhol would appreciate this ... "1000 MSCHF ARTWORKS FOR SALE: One original Andy Warhol (worth $20K) mixed at random into a stack of 999 exact MSCHF forgeries"
