A popular dog food trend could be 'fuelling the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria'

Na żywo

Raw dog food is increasingly popular - especially in the UK and US - but new research from the University of Portugal has found multidrug-resistant bacteria in samples of raw dog food. Antibiotic resistance is classed by the World Health Organisation as one of the greatest threats to global health - and dog food could be an overlooked driving factor in a future public health crisis. 📝 @marthedeferrer

All the raw-frozen samples (25% of the overall total looked at) contained multidrug-resistant Enterococci. Enterococci is worrying because as a genus it is often 'intrinsically resistant' to antibiotics - meaning it can lead to serious outbreaks. 👉

While there certainly has been research funded by companies like Mars Petcare and Nestle - this study appears to be independently carried out. It's worth noting that it's critical of industrial petfood manufacturing as a whole, not just raw food.
