Recovery efforts continue in the northeast US and Louisiana following Ida's destruction

Live

Recovery efforts are underway across the country following the devastation left in Ida’s wake in the Northeast and parts of the Gulf Coast. Remnants of the storm battered the Mid-Atlantic region with rain and heavy flooding Wednesday into Thursday, leaving dozens dead just days after the storm caused widespread damage throughout Louisiana. Ida is tied for the fifth-strongest hurricane to ever hit the US mainland, USA Today says. The National Hurricane Center is now keeping its eye on the 12th named storm of the season, Larry, which became a hurricane on Thursday, but is not expected to threaten any land over the next few days, according to The New York Times. The Atlantic hurricane season began on Tuesday, June 1, and ends on Tuesday, November 30. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) encourages people residing in states along the Atlantic coast to download the FEMA mobile app and learn about how to prepare for hurricanes by visiting Ready.gov and Listo.gov. There is a 60% chance of an above-normal hurricane season this year, according to NOAA.

"We need someone to come along and stop doing study after study and not doing a goddamn thing about it after they study it. We wait too many years for them to do studies, and while that's happening, we're being washed away," a Louisiana resident says amid fallout of hurricane.
