North Korea fires two ballistic missiles into the sea, US and Japanese officials report

Live

North Korea fired two ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, outside the exclusive economic zone, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga confirmed. Senior US officials also confirmed the missile launches and a statement from the US Military added that "this activity highlights the threat that North Korea's illicit weapons program poses to its neighbors and the international community." The incident marks the first time North Korea has launched missiles since Joe Biden became US president. North Korean state media on Friday released photos of the launch and said the country tested "newly developed, new type tactical guided missiles" and that the “test-firing was quite successful just as we confidently predicted.” US president Joe Biden warned of “responses” on Thursday if North Korea escalates but said that he is open to diplomacy.
