NASA Perseverance rover successfully lands on Mars

Na żywo

The NASA Perseverance rover landed at Mars' Jezero Crater on February 18 nearly seven months after its takeoff to the Red Planet. Perseverance becomes the fifth NASA rover to ever touch down on Mars after Sojourner, twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity and Curiosity. Perseverance will spend the coming years scouring for signs of ancient microbial life in a historic mission that will bring back samples from Mars to Earth and prepare the way for future human visitors. 👀 First-look images from Mars 😌 Perseverance rover lands safely ❓ Q&A from NASA experts 📝 Purpose of the mission 🏆 Meet the four other rovers who landed on Mars 📙 Interesting mission facts 🎬 Behind-the-scenes action 🚀 More on Jezero Crater 📸 Perseverance + its 23 new cameras 🤔 What's the MOXIE instrument? 🎮 Interactive activities!

Jezero is located in the northern hemisphere of Mars on the rim of what is called the Isidis Basin. It's home to what was one of the many lakes on Mars, and this is essential to why it was chosen as a landing site! (2/6)

An essential goal of Mars 2020 is to learn about whether microbial life may have been present in Mars' past. So why not look at a place where there was once water? Indicators of life might be buried within the sediments of Jezero. (3/6)

What made Jezero unique is one of its more prominent features you can see below, aka the river delta. Sediments from the surrounding area may have been carried by an ancient river and could've deposited directly into Jezero, making it a great candidate. (4/6)

The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) aims to help us learn about producing oxygen on Mars, which could be used for either fuel or breathing purposes. It's located on the front right side of Perseverance, and will make O2 similar to a tree! (2/4)

Mars' atmosphere comprises mostly of CO2, meaning it's an abundant resource ready to be utilized. MOXIE will take in this CO2 and from it produce O2 through electrolysis. It'll generate this O2 at a rate of up to 10 grams per hour, which you might think isn't that much. (3/4)
