CDC confirms that double-masking significantly helps prevent the spread of COVID-19

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new report on Wednesday confirming what many experts had already suggested: wearing two masks prevents the spread of COVID-19 more than wearing just one mask. The CDC also reports that a tight mask fit is important and significantly protects the wearer from contracting COVID-19.

A few takeaways from this CDC report: - Double masks decreased exposure by 92.5%, more than 2X what a single mask did. - Wearing a tightly-fitted mask reduced exposure by 60%, even when just one subject wore it. - That number was 96% when both did

    3) “One is wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask. The second is improving the fit of a single surgical mask by knotting the ear loops and tucking in the sides close to the face to prevent air from leaking out around the edges and to form a closer fit.”

The benefits are clear: In the CDC study, a medical procedure mask alone blocked 42% of particles from a simulated cough, while a cloth mask alone blocked 44%. A cloth mask covering a medical procedure mask blocked 92.5% of the cough particles.

And when both people were wearing fitted double masks, the receiver's exposure was reduced by 96%. When they were both wearing knotted and tucked masks, same thing -- 96% reduction.

Yes, double-masking can provide an additional layer of coronavirus protection. However, you don't automatically become twice as safe. "This is not how depth filtration works," explains one researcher. The best ways to maximize your mask's effectiveness:

The CDC has not issued official guidance on double-masking, however, the evidence suggests two masks are likely more effective than a single mask.

Recent guidance from experts suggests that double masking (or upgrading masks to 2+ layers) not only adds extra filtration but also covers gaps. Whenever you are on campus or in public, wear at least a two-layer mask that fully covers your nose & mouth & fits snugly on your face.

University of Washington study this week concluded that we would save more than 30,000 lives in next 3 months if 95% of us wore masks consistently. (That would mean hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and millions of infections avoided too) 9/x

Masks should be 2 or 3 ply woven fabric, as per CDC, & should fit snugly over nose/on cheeks and under chin so that air goes through the mask, not around the edges. Hold your mask up to the light and it should block the light out (or its too thin). 10/x
