The Miami Marlins on Friday announced they hired Kim Ng to oversee baseball operations as general manager. This makes Ng (pronounced ANG) the first Asian-American GM in MLB history and she is believed to be the first woman GM of any professional men's sports team in North America, according to the Marlins.

    Kim Ng has 3 World Series rings. She made 8 postseason appearances as an executive. She was assistant GM of the and , then spent a decade in the Commissioner’s office. Objectively speaking, she has one of the greatest résumés of any first-time GM in history.

    Forget just baseball. A woman never has been the general manager of a major American professional sports team period until Kim Ng was hired by the Miami Marlins today. Their COO is Caroline O'Connor. The Marlins' three highest-ranking officials are two women and an ex-shortstop.

  9. Let's be perfectly clear here. Kim Ng has been among the most qualified GM candidates for the past two decades. She has always been capable of running a Major League team. This isn't a risky hire -- it's a smart one, by a team that obviously wants to win a World Series.

  10. Kim Ng was hired by the Yankees as an assistant GM in 1998. She became an AGM with the Dodgers in 2001. She first interviewed for a GM job in 2005. That is what we call a Baseball Lifer.

  14. I've known Kim Ng since 2006. She was the smartest, toughest, and most rational person in the Dodgers front office from day one. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS OMFG I AM JUMPING AROUND AT 7:45 AM. A BRILLIANT WOMAN WILL RUN A BASEBALL TEAM.

  17. An entire sport is rejoicing. Virtually everyone in baseball thinks Kim Ng, former assistant GM of Yankees and Dodgers, is a great choice to run the Marlins. A‘ s assistant GM Billy Owens: “Kim is an AWESOME hire! Truly pumped to hear the news. Groundbreaking and well-deserved.”

  19. Very cool to see the report that Kim Ng got the GM gig with the Marlins. Considering Kim was an assistant GM 22 years ago, this is long overdue. And she knows Don Mattingly very well from her many years as assistant GM job with Dodgers. Tremendous person as well. Congrats Kim!

    My first year on the Yankees beat was 2001, and I chatted with Kim Ng several times. Always assumed she would be a GM. It’s a shame it took almost two more decades, but I couldn’t be happier for her that her time has finally come.

    Finally. From what many people have told me about Kim Ng, this is incredibly well deserved. It's a shame that Michael Hill was sent packing, but this is a great day for a lot of people.
