Taiwan marked its 200th straight day without a locally transmitted case of COVID-19 while many countries around the world continue to see an ongoing increase in infections. The country has enforced universal mask wearing, contract tracing and border control since the pandemic began.

    It has now been 200 days since local transmission of COVID-19 was recorded in . This achievement will only be sustained through constant vigilance, and has only been possible due to the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by the people of Taiwan. 🇹🇼 💪

    Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control last reported a domestic case on April 12. CDC officials noted the milestone and thanked the public for playing a role, while urging people to continue to wear masks and to wash their hands often.

    All of which is underpinned, both in terms of governmental readiness and citizen willingness to wear masks/ do tracing, by the experience of Sars in 2003 in which Taiwan suffered 668 cases, and 181 fatalities

    Taiwan has a population of 24 million, so significant (ie 5x NZ, and just under two fifths UK) and is one of the most densely populated in world, eg significantly more than UK (652/sqkm vs 280/sqkm)

    If you studied public health (shoutout ), you know Taiwan is what's up when it comes to public health. This paper and their response to COVID-19 shows importance of contact tracing and general public health preparedness/investment.

    What countries with surging infections can take away from Taiwan’s experience is that nothing works without contact tracing those who have tested positive and then quarantining them, said Chen Chien-jen, Taiwan’s former vice president and an epidemiologist.

    I agree that privacy issues have to carefully handled, but Taiwan has done so through passing laws through their democratic parliament, with an close eye on privacy checks. You may not agree with their system but I haven't met anyone in Taiwan who finds it "really repressive"
