Joe Biden did not push out a Ukrainian prosecutor for investigating his son, The Washington Post reports

Live

A series of emails obtained by the New York Post were published on Wednesday in a story alleging that Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, introduced his father to a top executive at Ukrainian energy firm Burisma, and that Biden pushed for the firing of a prosecutor investigating Burisma. However, according to The Washington Post, that prosecutor was not investigating Burisma at that time, and then-Vice President Biden played no role in pressuring Ukraine officials into firing the prosecutor for the reason alleged by the New York Post. It also doesn’t detail whether the elder Biden actually met with Hunter’s Ukrainian business associate. UPDATE: This Moment was updated to clarify the specific nature of Joe Biden’s role in the ouster of the Ukrainian prosecutor, as reported by The Washington Post.

  2. The New York Post story some are tweeting about has a huge falsehood in it: Story claims Biden pushed for the ouster of the Ukrainian prosecutor when he was investigating Burisma. Flatly false. And the ouster was backed by international institutions.

  3. Nunes repeats the falsehood that the prosecutor was investigating Burisma when Biden was fulfilling US policy to strengthen anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine. The problem was the prosecutor was NOT investigating the owner of Burisma.

The NYP article includes a false statement in the lede about the prosecutor’s relationship to Burisma- he was actually attacked by the Obama admin for *not* investigating them. For those who would like a refresher on this fake scandal ->

Again, stipulating that the suspect email is real, there's literally nothing in it that says Joe Biden met with a Burisma adviser. "The opportunity to meet," may just as easily have meant Hunter promised a meeting in the future that may never have occurred.

  7. Let’s try this one more time: the Ukrainian prosecutor was fired because he was NOT prosecuting corruption cases and there was NO Ukrainian investigation into Burisma. In addition to there being no evidence to support the bogus allegations, the basic premise is simply false.

Important addendum: Nothing about the premise of the story adds up. Every credible source has testified that the prosecutor involved was fired because he was *not* investigating corruption and removing him made it likelier Burisma would face a real probe.

  9. Before more journos go peddling this story, they should do some diligence on the cover story for how Giuliani got the “hard drive.” Giuliani has been conspiring with Russian agents for months, including someone the US says is actively trying to interfere in this election

  12. The story does not show that Burisma was actually facing an investigation when Joe Biden pushed Ukraine to fire its top prosecutor, an official widely considered corrupt by U.S. and European officials.

  15. The story does not say when Rudy Giuliani obtained the hard drive. The store owner says he made a copy before turning the laptop over to authorities last December. Has Giuliani been holding onto it since then? Or did he get it more recently?

Lastly, if such a meeting occurred, it should be pretty easy to pinpoint with accuracy when and where, which would seem an important part of reporting a story like this before blasting out the innuendo — especially given the suspect actors involved.
