Supreme Court rules Trump must turn over tax records to New York prosecutors

On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld a subpoena issued by New York prosecutors to access President Trump's tax records. In doing so, the decision rejects Trump's assertion that sitting presidents should be exempt from criminal investigations while in office. Both of Trump's SCOTUS appointees, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch, ruled against him.

    7-2 SCOTUS decision that Trump's tax returns can be subpoenaed. Only Alito & Thomas dissent. Robert's opinion: "no citizen, not even the President, is categorically above the common duty to produce evidence when called upon in a criminal proceeding."

    Roberts explains that while all citizens have to comply with congressional subpoenas, subpoenas for information of the president "implicate special concerns regarding the separation of powers" that the D.C. Circuit didn't adequately consider.

  14. So long story short, Trump losses in NYC case, but those documents are subject to confidentiality. So President's financial records seem unlikely to become public before 2020 election as sent the Congressional cases back to lower courts for further review.
