Into The Wild bus removed from Alaska over safety concerns
The Alaska National Guard has removed the famous bus after various hikers had to be rescued or lost their lives trying to reach it. The bus was where Chris McCandless lived, the person who inspired the 1996 bestselling book Into The Wild and 2002 movie of the same name.
The famous bus from Stampede Trail is on a flatbed trailer heading south on the Parks Hwy. A chinook helicopter moved it today from its resting spot on the west side of the Teklanika River. The state spearheaded the operation. Sterling Shreeve photo.
State officials say an abandoned bus in the Alaska backcountry, popularized by the book "Into the Wild" and a movie of the same name, has been removed. Alaska Natural Resources Commissioner Corri Feige says the decision prioritizes public safety.
The 1940s-era bus made famous by John Krakauer’s book, “Into the Wild,” was removed from its longtime home along the Stampede Trail today. The Denali Borough had requested it be taken out after various rescues/recoveries of hikers trying to make it to the site.

Alaskan authorities airlift the abandoned bus where Chris McCandless—profiled in ‘Into the Wild’—died in 1992, apparently to end the frequent rescues (and occasional deaths) of tourists who’d hiked there.

The bus where Chris McCandless lived (and died) in 1992 was airlifted out of the Alaskan bush and put into storage in an undisclosed location for "safe storage."

I'm glad that the bus where Chris McCandless died has been removed from the Stampede Trail. This is long overdue. There have been too many deaths, too many near deaths and too many costly rescue missions. I wrote this column 13 years ago about selling it on eBay. #akleg
