Barack Obama addresses George Floyd's death in virtual town hall
Former US president Barack Obama made remarks on the protests surrounding police brutality and the death of George Floyd for the first time on camera in a livestream as part of the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Town Hall series. Former Attorney General Eric Holder and other activists calling on police reforms also joined the panel.

I talked w/ Tiffany Crutcher whose twin brother Terence Crutcher was shot by a white police officer in 2016. She told me watching the video of George Floyd made her feel like Terence was being shot all over again. Terence’s kids are terrified of officers & still in counseling.

Defund the police. The money they receive should be moved to the community programs that keep our communities healthy and safe, as I share below. We reduce harm immediately. But ultimately, we can live without police. America has abolished racist systems before. We can, too.

We CAN reduce immediate harm, like changed use of force policies, cut police budgets, and changed laws. We CAN permanently erase the scourge of police violence in America because we can keep our communities safe and well without them. Immediate change AND radical imagination.
