Mookie Betts bids farewell to the Red Sox in a touching tribute video
In a brief one-minute clip, the former AL MVP thanked Boston for his nine-year tenure with the Red Sox and gave an enthusiastic shoutout to the Los Angeles faithful. Shortly after the video's release, Red Sox owner John Henry and president Sam Kennedy addressed the media and explained their decision to trade Betts.
Wow mook. Wasn’t ready to let you go, but spread your wings. Always know we appreciate what you did in Boston. One of my all time fav players on my all time fav team. 🤟🏾 Thank you.
#RedSox owner apologized to fans for trading Mookie Betts to #Dodgers but “we felt we could not sit on our hands and let him go without getting value in return.” Team prez Sam Kennedy said “this was not about getting under CBT. You don’t trade Mookie Betts to get under the CBT.”
John Henry’s annual spring training appearance has begun. Addressing Red Sox fans directly. Reading from 2-page prepared written statement. “I grew up a fan of the St Louis Cardinals. My favorite player was Stan Musial. My heart would’ve been broken if Stan the Man was traded.”
Henry says other teams are getting smarter in their spending and Red Sox need to adjust as well. Praises the free market system and says it’s not the system’s fault the Sox ended up in this position to trade Mookie Betts.
Asked if this is a bridge year for the Red Sox, John Henry looked at Tom Werner and said, “don’t you think this would be a record payroll for a bridge year?”
Henry said unlike the Lester negotiations, he has no regrets in handling of the Mookie Betts negotiations: “We made legitimate offers all 3 offseasons. I made it personally clear to him 1 on 1 that I wanted to see him in a Red Sox uniform for the rest of his life, if possible.”
I asked Tom Werner if he thought the Red Sox could’ve competed for a title with Mookie Betts and David Price on the roster. He said yes.
He then quickly pointed out he thought they still can compete for a title and pointed out that the Nationals just won without Bryce Harper.
Red Sox chairman Tom Werner told me the team would’ve still traded Mookie Betts for this package, even if the team was already below the #MLB Competitive Balance Tax threshold. #RedSox

A free market system, except it benefits from antitrust law exemptions, minimum wage exemptions, taxpayer subsidized stadiums, and a luxury tax structure that serves as a salary cap. Sure. Same/same.

I cannot help but feel that if you have to apologize for trading someone, a way you wouldn’t have to apologize is by not trading him. But I am not a doctor
