Trump campaign airs Super Bowl ad featuring Alice Johnson on criminal justice reform

Uživo

The ad featured footage of Alice Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender who was granted clemency by President Trump in 2018. Many viewers pointed out that Trump's decision was the result of a lobbying effort by Kim Kardashian West, and not an act of policy.

The Trump campaign just ran an unexpected Q1 Super Bowl ad highlighting the story of Alice Johnson, who was serving a life sentence for nonviolent drug offenses until asked him for clemency. (The ad then says Trump is "reuniting" thousands of families.)

Two Super Bowls ago I was sitting in a prison cell. Today I am a free woman and my story was featured in a Super Bowl Ad. I will spend the rest of my life fighting for the wrongly and unjustly convicted! God Bless America!

TV ads are mostly pointless these days, especially someone with universal name recognition like Trump, but...that was a pretty decent opening salvo, gotta admit.

Interesting that this ad makes it seem like Johnson was released because of criminal justice reform but it had nothing to do with that. Trump granted her clemency after being lobbied by Kim Kardashian.

  11. Alice Johnson is one person who won early release because celebrities brought her to Trump's attention. She deserved it. But there are thousands more like her in prison. We need a real pardon process that works fairly. We need real criminal justice reform. Don't be fooled.

  12. I’ll say it. That Alice Johnson commercial trying to say Trump was some leader on criminal reform is exactly why folks are questioning Kim K’s involvement in criminal justice. Many of us applauded her efforts advocate for Alice and others. This legitimized every concern

  13. Trump is running on criminal justice reform? Really? How exactly does that square with the fact that both of his AGs Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr have undone almost all Obama era justice and police reform, target progressive DAs, press policies of mass incarceration at every turn?

I can’t stop thinking about the fact that Trump bought a Super Bowl ad to cast himself as the champion of black women prisoners. It’s mind boggling

  15. Trump runs a ad claiming he’s reuniting families. In reality trump administration not only still has kids in cages they also haven’t been able to reunite kids with their parents separated by his zero tolerance policy at border.

  17. Folks are shocked there’s pro-Trump ads & cop-aganda? Have folks not been following events of the last 3 years, when Trump told the NFL to “get that son of a bitch off the field” for protesting racism and they did? This is all about telling us negroes to stay in line.
