Amazing
Knitting the weather onto a scarf ☀️🌧
One of @porridgebrain's New Year's Resolutions was to knit every day, using the threads to mark the different daily temperatures. Turns out, she's not the only one who does this.

I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.pic.twitter.com/XQ9scIMX5c

It's already become a very established and special daily ritual, looking outside, watching the temperature through the day, setting aside ten minutes or so. I'll share it here at the end of every month as it grows and the colours change.

F's been showing it to computer science collegues at work who are fascinated. Knitting is basically a type of coding. I really love the way craft, stitch and colour can become data collection.

This is lovely! How are you incorporating temperature and aspect? So how would you capture a cold sunny day versus a cold and overcast day?

The weather colour yarn is held alongside the temperature colour yarn and then used as one strand to knit the day.

A friend of mine crocheted a blanket for her sister and brother-in-law along the same lines- a colour coded square for the high temp of each....I think week? they'd been together, from first date to their wedding (about five years!) It's like art, data and history all in one.

What a wonderful creative brain you have. It will be a beautiful scarf and a permanent record of the year.

Stranding the weather in is such a clever idea. Love the little glimmers of sunshine.

Temperature is data but weather is MOOD! It felt really important.

I've seen so many crocheted temperature blankets but your second strand to show sunny/overcast etc is genius! Beautiful work xx

The ones I've seen before were lovely but quite functional-looking. I wanted to try and make something shifting and beautiful too!

Here’s my scarf for Glasgow for 2019! I was surprised it looks like a lovely summer but it didn’t feel like that because of constant rain!pic.twitter.com/5G0hYQRjQn

I’m behind on my 2019 crochet blanket documentation of every day and night spent outdoors - walking, swimming, camping and bivvies. Got as far as early July so far...pic is Jan-May, but there was a lot more outdoor action July-October

I did this blanket for my 50th birth year (2017). I used a 2 degree difference for colour. Ended up with 23 colours and an enormous blanket. The green around the edge represents the seasons.pic.twitter.com/C7vYhNmsBS

First month of my 2020 temperature scarf done! I've divided up the maximum daily temperature into 7 bins (modelled using
#python) and each day knit a new row of a corresponding colour#slowvisualisationpic.twitter.com/z3anu0aLUa

I am knitting a temperature scarf for the year of 2020. Each day I knit a row according to the temperature and the assigned color. I am loving it! I love thinking of today as light blue. From 19-67 degrees this month!pic.twitter.com/w5on49rJK9

January section of weather scarf. Two rows per day according to the temperature. Dark blue = 0-5, light blue = 5-10, green = 10-15. And dry January nearly complete.pic.twitter.com/e804z0Zaur
