Andrew Yang: It's 'both an honor and disappointment' to be lone candidate of color at Dem debate
Entrepreneur Andrew Yang was asked about the lack of diversity on stage at the sixth Democratic primary debate on Thursday. Yang used the opportunity to tout his plan for a universal income, suggesting that if more people had disposable income, there would be a more diverse set of candidates.

After the Democratic party highlighted its field of candidates as the most diverse to ever seek the presidency, Thursday night’s debate will only include one person of color, Andrew Yanghttps://on.wsj.com/2ZbkY3k

Businessman Andrew Yang: "It's both an honor and disappointment to be the lone candidate of color on the stage tonight. I miss Kamala [Harris], I miss Cory [Booker], though I think Cory will be back."

Yang pointed out POC often don’t have the disposable income to donate to political campaigns, and used it to tout his plan for a universal basic income. “I guarantee if we had a freedom dividend...I would not be the only candidate of color on this stage tonight."

“Fewer than 5% of Americans donate to political campaigns,” Andrew Yang says. “You know where you need to donate to political campaigns? Disposable income.” Big applause and cheers.

“The way we fix this is that we take Martin Luther King’s message of a guaranteed minimum income” and implement my basic income plan, Andrew Yang says. “If we had a freedom dividend of $1000 a month, I would not be the only candidate of color onstage tonight.”

Yang, asked about being the only candidate of color on stage, implicitly blasts DNC’s debate criteria based on individual donor benchmarks, rightly pointing out that only 5% of Americans donate to campaigns.

"It's both an honor & disappointment to be the only candidate of color on the stage tonight... Black & Latinos have something more powerful against them." Then calls out economic and health disparities. Yang is not my guy, but I deeply appreciate this.

This is why representation isn't enough. It is impressive that Yang is the only candidate of color on the stage tonight. But he does not represent a vision of racial justice or even social justice that is intersectional, and that matters.

I'm glad Amna called out the utter lack of color on this stage and how the Dem base IS people of color. Yang gives Kamala and Booker a shoutout. Classy. So far, this is his best answer of the night...until he got to the $1000 a month, but...I'll take a $1000.

I wish Andrew Yang had not been the one asked about the whiteness of this debate stage. Ask the white people what it says. Don't make the person of color answer for it.

As the only candidate of color on the stage tonight, Andrew Yang delivers the strongest message about racial diversity, and even makes a case for the Freedom Dividend. This was his breakout moment, and as an Asian American I feel honored to be represented by him.

As the lone candidate of color on the
#DemDebate stage tonight, Andrew Yang says he misses Kamala Harris and Cory Booker. And that Booker “will be back.” Nah brah. We miss@JulianCastro and HE

Just one candidate of color — Andrew Yang — made it to tonight's
#DemDebate stage. That's led to a lot of public consternation about whether the debate qualifications are too stringent.https://n.pr/36XbJ9zHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi -
Of the seven people who made the stage, Andrew Yang is the only candidate of color who has hit the polling and donor thresholds required to participate in the debate. http://bit.ly/2EHvdmd pic.twitter.com/Ltj6GF6yCx
