Live

Israel's interior minister said he has granted a humanitarian request by US Democratic Congresswomen Tlaib to visit her grandmother in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, but that she rejected the offer because of the conditions set. The news comes a day after Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely confirmed that Tlaib and her fellow Congresswoman Ilan Omar had been barred from entering the country.

It is an affront that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, under pressure from President Trump, would deny entry to representatives of the U.S. government. My full statement:

  15. It's astounding that Israel decided on its own to respect the office of the US Congress - and then was reportedly put off doing the right thing by the President of the United States, who is invested in giving Omar and Tlaib as much publicity as possible as an election strategy.

Terrible decision for many reasons. Banning Omar and Tlaib does nothing to make Israel more secure. This fuels the BDS narrative further by reinforcing the view that 🇮🇱 is oppressive, rather than a pluralistic society of diversity & complexity. Nothing good can come from this.

We disagree with Reps. Omar and Tlaib’s support for the anti-Israel and anti-peace BDS movement, along with Rep. Tlaib’s calls for a one-state solution. We also believe every member of Congress should be able to visit and experience our democratic ally Israel firsthand.

  21. In barring Omar and Tlaib Netanyahu in a single act creates more publicity and political oxygen than any visit might have; makes an Israeli PM appear to be a tool of a US President; blackens Israel’s image; and erodes bipartisanship critical to US-Israeli relations

  22. 2. Netanyahu is sadly learning from Trump — barring Omar and Tlaib is devising a solution to a problem he didn’t have and creating additional problems in process.

  23. Trump tells Rashida Tlaib to go back where she came. Now Israel plans to block her entrance, preventing her from visiting her Palestinian homeland+family, due to pressure from Trump. However, lets not forget, Israel regularly blocks Palestinian entrance so this is just not Trump.

  24. However, this is much more than just blocking her entry, this is blocking the entry of everyone who voted for her and for Ilhan Omar. This is blocking democratic representatives form visiting a country that gets aid+support from very Congress where they sit. This is scandalous.

  25. Barring the congresswomen for expressing themselves is not good for relations between our nations. We should agree to disagree without barring each other. Visits, meetings and dialogue rather than banishment, creates better understanding.
