Archivists counter Boles's bigoted drivel

Live

Boles, a prominent person in the archives field, rehashed horrid arguments of late Mark Greene, who declared that social justice shouldn't be an archival imperative, with archivists countering these arguments, sometimes using the #critarch hashtag

Well it was fun while it lasted. Since we’re only going off of my one article, no, I’m not proposing adding archival privilege. I call on archivists to discuss it, but I don’t outright say this has to happen. 6/

Again I don’t define what archival privilege could be in this article. But funny thing. There’s no citation at the end of this sentence. It’s speculation. Even if we put that aside, government isn’t the only party that would be subject to archival privilege. 7/

I just have to ask, how did any self-respecting editor allow this article to get this far? My stuff starts on p 14. There’re so many red flags waving before that. Oh sorry. The AA editor told me earlier today they aren’t responsible for fact checking. My bad. 8/

  4. 1 Aug 2019

Nope. The idea isn’t new. When I wrote about it, it wasn’t even new coming from an archivist. This would have been a great time to cite to Harold L. Miller who wrote about it in 1989 in the American Archivist no less. 9/

  5. 1 Aug 2019

Well hey now that sentence is correct. This was considered in 1986 and while archival privilege wasn’t accepted in that particular instance, the door wasn’t closed by the court. We are 4/8 for accurate (if not properly attributed) sentences 10/

    Show this thread
    Undo
  6. 1 Aug 2019

Yeah no. I don’t say that in the article. Boles may choose to believe that’s what I thought. But again notice how there isn’t a citation. That’s because there isn’t something to directly cite to. Sloppy, . Very sloppy. 11/

  7. 1 Aug 2019

We’ll damn. You’ve got be there. That is a direct quote from my abstract. But what does that have to do with the previous sentence? And I don’t believe I have an actual answer to that question in my article. I still don’t. But do go on. 12/

    Show this thread

  8. 1 Aug 2019

Whoa, whoa. Where did I say that? Oh right. Once again there’s no cite. These are Frank’s Thoughts. While Frank & a certain AA editor may think this is absolute fact, it is but the thoughts of someone who didn’t write the article. 13/

    Show this thread

  9. 1 Aug 2019

Arguably, if you look at more than just “Archives Beyond the Pale,” you could write that sentence. However, it isn’t that simple. There’d have to be a hefty footnote referencing several pieces I wrote with a bunch of qualifications to back up the assertion. 14/

    Show this thread
    Undo
  10. 1 Aug 2019

This is an oversimplification, but I’m seeing that’s par for the course. I argue that archivists had a duty to engage with archival privilege because it would be coming up in the courts and it’s better to be a part of the discussion than cut out of it. 15/

    Show this thread

  11. 1 Aug 2019

Ok you got me. In that first sentence, I am saying that archivists should be advocating. This is a part of the grand finale of my article, after I discussed the evolution of privilege and raised the issue of collections being at risk. 16/

I still believe that there should be some form of privilege to protect private collections—not records—that are donated to an archives, especially if it’s something that provides insight into a part of the historical record that would not be recorded otherwise 17/
