Chicago mayor calls dropping of charges against Jussie Smollett a ‘whitewash of justice’
Jussie Smollett made an “emergency” court appearance on Tuesday, where 16 felony charges against him were dropped. The actor was previously accused of filing a false police report after allegedly staging a hate crime against himself.

#JussieSmollett made a surprise visit to the Criminal Court building in #Chicago today. Reps for his legal team say there will be a “huge” announcement at about 1045am.
The courts had #JussieSmollett appearing again April 17th, it’s unclear why he’s here. He’s joined by family, legal counsel, and a community activist well known in the city.
Here’s the full statement from Anne Kavanagh, who reps Smollett team: “Media Alert: Jussie Smollett is in Judge Watkins'courtroom at 26th and California for an emergency court appearance. Smollett and his lawyers will speak to reporters afterwards at the courthouse.” 3/3

This is partially why the case is dropped, lawyers from #JussieSmollett’s camp says “indictment should never have been filed in the first place… The case is voluntarily discontinued by the prosecutor.”
A PR company just sent out this talking points memo on #JussieSmollett that includes this line: “ The news media was used by the Chicago Police Department and in many cases reported falsehoods without properly checking them out. “
Statement from @20centuryfoxTV on Smollett charges dropped: “Many of you have reached out regarding today’s developments in the Jussie Smollett case. As of this time, the studio and network have no comment.”
