"At Google, software engineering represents roughly 80-90% of the work, while only 10-20% of the time involves original programming. Most teaching on this subject concentrates on programming, but little on software engineering",

The more software I read, the most I'm convinced that most systems just "happen to work," rather than being "guaranteed to work." Our entire ecosystem is built on assumptions that aren't enumerated, communicated or defined. This will come back to haunt us. 🙂

I'm excited that this content is becoming available, and uncomfortably excited about the feedback we hope to receive. 🙂

There is a difference between "developing" and "engineering" software, just as there is a difference between "constructing" and "engineering" buildings. We spend too much time worrying about how to nail things together and not enough considering if the result is even feasible.

Ordinarily I try to be real "Act like you've been there", but the response to () has been literally overwhelming. Thank you all for your kind words. Brief *squee*: #3 in Computer Programming new releases. Never writing/editing before: WOW.

I don't need to have read this book to be pretty certain you should all pre-order it. We talk too much about programming and too little about engineering. Few people have as much experience as Titus on the matter. It's also an opportunity to learn how Google handles its scale😁

I wish I had Twitter handles for everyone involved (later), but I want to give early shout-outs to and (my major collaborators), as well as for kicking off the project, and for the Foreword.

This has been an incredibly hard project, but I'm super excited that our book is now available for pre-order. We are still learning, but I expect these insights into how Google does Software Engineering will be useful for the rest of the industry.
