Learning Perl6 is like being stuck in a small dark room with a bat that's flapping around wildly, and talking to the bat and slowly coming to understand what it is like to be a bat.

How much of our writing is spent repeating certain caveats, or apologizing for not including them up front? Could I maintain a list of caveats, and just link to it repeatedly?

"There’s a general philosophy here; attempts to add performance to a slow system often add complexity, in the form of complex caching, distributed systems, or additional bookkeeping for fine-grained incremental recomputation. These features add complexity and new classes of bugs"

I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

Status: thought I should write something in Prolog. Now using recursion to read bytes from a file. Send help.

Lastly, it's entirely possible I've been doing this since 2002, but I'm going to blame for the fact that I initially typed "Chompsky" instead of "Chomsky" every time in this thread.

Come to think of it, since Chomsky focused on syntax, and was very skeptical of semantics, I'm not sure most of the article is directly relevant to his concept of innateness.

...children don't hear enough examples to learn complex grammatical rules just by generalizing, without having innate tendencies to learn certain rules. The behavior of a bot trained on 40GB of text doesn't answer that argument.

This is a good article, but even if it didn't show the limits of GPT-2, the idea that GPT-2 could tell us something about Chomskyian innateness seems wrong. One major argument for a Chomskyian view is "poverty of the stimulus"...

Cool smart nerd: why is it called Football, there's no feet or balls, you should call it Handegg Dumb idiot jock: why is it called Computer Science, it's not science and you don't actually need computers, you should call it Mathematics of Computation

Great account of the mess of creating websites, especially layout, from the mid 90s through the present. If you're in this racket and don't know how primitive things were 24 years ago, you really need to read this.

"It depends" sounds too wishy washy and is not a great conversation starter/continuer. For the same semantics but a much better outcome, just ask "When?" There's almost always a when-to and when-not-to. Everyone learns more from the when discussion.

TFW you’d been procrastinating about writing up an utterly ridiculous bug and the new version fixes it.

As programmers, we write parsers all the time, but handling parser errors well tends to fall by the wayside. Here's a quick blog post with some high-level observations on how to deal with parse errors well:

Is this supposed to be a gotcha? Clinton was bad, the dossier was crap, but she didn’t break the law to try and blackmail a foreign leader.

CNBC has changed its article to specify Warren's plan seeks to criminalize disinformation about voting, not disinformation generally. I still oppose state attempts to criminalize internet content - it's not the solution - but it's not as dangerous as CNBC originally suggested.
