I think this was depressingly inevitable once decided to cover US domestic terrorism. The American far right attack the parents of children murdered in school shootings, absolutely nothing is off limits for them. There are no depths to which they will not sink.

The repeated use of "children" kinda buries the lede that these are adults who cut off parents. Convinced that the anti-trans hate movement is spearheaded by abusive parents who unironically believe it should be illegal for their victims to go no contact.

Conor Friedersdorf is quoting "concerned parents" of trans kids and it's going about how you'd expect. theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar

Every time I show up at a public consult around a new development I emphasize that we're in a housing emergency, but it sometimes feels like that's an abstract concept to NIMBYs and folks not paying attention. These numbers are stark; we need to build SO much more housing here.

In Ottawa, a whopping 1 in 8 households is in core housing need and this doesn't include people experiencing homelessness (now 2,000, up from 1,340 in 2021) and people living in (often terrible) rooming houses.
Stats on the housing and homelessness crisis, specifically that 44,435 households are in core housing need, 1 in 8 households

third issue: by promoting verified to the top, it ensures the “views” metric goes sky high while the like/rt/follows metrics stay flat, so paid verified users are slowly starting to go out of their minds wondering why views =\= engagement

The funniest, most accurate explanation of why a blue checkmark is Elon's mark of death.

A reddit post by user Mecha-Jesus There are really 2 main issues that make the new Twitter verification system a complete nightmare. The first is user base. Very few normal users are willing to pay for a free social media site. Moreover, the main selling point of the service is to boost post visibility. The service inherently appeals only to people who both a) Care extremely deeply about their posts being seen, and b) Make posts that Inherently unappealing 2 other twitter Users, Since people with appealing interesting funny not weird posts would be able to naturally grow an audience on the platform if they want. So pretty much every single blue check is a hyper online weirdo who is deeply bad at posting despite being obsessed with Twitter metrics
A photograph of text which states: The second is that verified replies get promoted to the top of every post. You have to scroll through all the blue check replies to even get the most Non blue check replies period this is true even for blue check replies that have zero engagement are completely off topic or Are just straight up spam or scams. As a result if you're looking for relevant discussion on a popular tweet you have to first scroll past the thoughts of some of the most terminally online inherently unlikeable People on the planet period so normal users are constantly exposed to the most offputting segments of the userbase. It's like if reddit Incentivized every anti social weirdo to post as much as possible to get their moneys Worth and then forced ever user to sort by controversial. It's a horrible structure that makes the product practically unusable for non weirdos which is just how elon likes that I guess.
