I struggled with this exact thing a lot during grad school. No matter how much you love science - try to decouple your self worth from your projects. You'll be much happier. A person before a PhD: understanding and combatting an academic identity crisis

    7. Eliot didn't have such a high view of fellow women writers in her day. She pointed out in the 1856 anonymous essay "Silly Novels by Lady Novelists" that a lot of their characters were frivolous and plots full of clichés. But she admired some, including Austen and Brontë.

As a trained scientist and a self-taught artist, the strongest commonalities I see between science and art are the ways they teach and enable us to understand the world around us. Drawing hard lines between the disciplines denies their overlap. Many great scientists were artists

What are some ways a mentor pulled you through a rough patch that you want to pay forward some day?

    6. She crafted the pen name George Eliot from her partner Lewes’s first name and Eliot, which she deemed “a good mouth-filling, easily pronounced word.” She decided that the pen name was necessary “as a tub to throw to the whale in case of curious enquiries.”

    5. She embraced her perceived ugliness and even made jokes about it to her friends. Lucy Clifford, a novelist, likened her to “a strange variety of horse that was full of knowledge, and beauty of thought, and mysteries of which the human being had no conception.”

    4. She initially wrote the young doctor Lydgate to be the protagonist in Middlemarch (then titled ‘A Study of Provincial Life’). A year later, she scrapped the story and began a new one which she called ‘Miss Brooke’. This new story became the first ten chapters of Middlemarch.

I wish science papers were also available in podcast format, where the authors shoot the shit about why they did what they did, what they found, and what they are doing next.

we should destigmatize retraction - retracting for fraud is bad - but not all retractions are fraud and there needs to be a way to say "hey, we messed up" or "hey, we were wrong" without being treated like a pariah

For my first work-related tweet of 2020, I am totally bummed to announce that we have retracted last year's paper on enzymatic synthesis of beta-lactams. The work has not been reproducible.
