Email said (paraphrasing): we recognize your child has aged out, but if you have a younger child who is still daycare age, your family's turn is finally here!

We got on the university list in first trimester and our infant spot opens up a year after he's no longer an infant. No other infant options in town, so we hired a nanny. She's spectacular but doubles childcare costs. No idea what single parents/those struggling financially do.
-
In our case (I was a grad student at the time) a neighbour who was a single mom watched him, and then when she got another job, another neighbour watched both our kids.
-
I'm glad it worked out! I now know how stressful/hard it is to maintain career goals and make sure kid(s) have good care.

We're #62 on our uni day care list :( the wait is normally "only" two years... But so is my contract
-
I put Arlo on the uni wait list when I was in my 2nd trimester...not holding my breath that there'll be a spot when I go back next year & no idea what we'll do as private daycares similarly booked up
-
I hope you find a place for your baby. It's so frustrating and stressful. (FWIW we made do by having a neighbour watch our baby. It was great--we made a wonderful family friend.)
-
Yes you have to create you're own community don't you! Especially without family nearby. Our kid is in daycare but we have to use the train rather than a quick walk across campus :(
-
Hopefully we'll find a place if uni doesn't come through & I'll keep my eye out for potential neighbours that could help

-
It's a stressful situation isn't it! Going back to work for new mums seriously needs less complications rather than more...
-
Definitely, I've been shelving the worry about it as it's all a bit much right now but going to have to figure things out in the new year

The most amazing thing to me is that they followed up with you, in my case that rarely happens!

Ha, true!

How can that even work? How can wait 11 years for a spot in a 0-5 centre if you put your name down pre-birth. I can understand maybe, 5 yrs but 11??? Do they have a complicated priority system?
-
Very high demand. It's Toronto. (We did get a spot in a different centre when child was 2.)

Ours wasn't quite as extreme but the call came 5 years after we had put our names on the waitlist for the on-campus daycare. I had already finished my Ph.D. and moved on.
-
That's just as bad!! Outcome is the same: you didn't have care when you needed it.

Why don't more facilities open?
-
that is a really good point.

I’m sure I’m missing something — We have low standards and low wages in the US, people practically run daycares out of vans.
-
This was (and, as I understand it, still is) the reality in Toronto. We did find care for our kid with a neighbour until he got a spot at a centre at age 2. But the wait lists are epic, so the email was a funny moment.
-
I believe you! I wasn’t making enough to cover the cost with my first, so I gave up and stayed home (after a brief & ridiculous foray into MIL based childcare).
