Hello, fellow academics! I’m helping with a new study on how PhD qualifier/prelim exams affect the mental health of grad students and would love input. Were your prelims/quals stressful? How did they affect your well-being? Any thoughts on them in general?

If you have a ton to say and just want to put it into one long message, I’ve created another anonymous form for that. Thanks so much in advance for all of your stories!https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-zeMkXxqXaJSHTmXregidujxFdZuOTfIl1jftSha7QnQrpg/viewform?usp=sf_link …

I'm completely fascinated by the options for the question "How much time (approximately) did you study for the exams?" They only go up to 40+ hours. I studied far more than this for my exam. Easily hundreds of hours over several months.

Yeah for me it was like 10 hours a day for weeks. Guess we aimed a bit low on that one haha!

Okay to complete this if I took my PhD comps almost nine years ago?

Hi, I notice that the first question is "What kind of program are you in?" Is it OK to answer the survey if we've completed the degree (or not) and moved on from the graduate program?
-
Absolutely!

Survey complete. My father died right before my engr qual, which I failed the first time. Had a very adversarial prof that was determined to see me fail.
