  1. When did we become so sensitive about naming viruses after places? Marburg, Ebola, Lassa, Zika, Japanese encephalitis, German measles, Guinea worm, Lyme disease ... but Wuhan virus? Unacceptable.

  2. "... all 29?" Including Taiwan, the PRC recognizes a total of 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities. That's 32 (HK and Macau make 34 administrative divisions). Which did you forget in your total of 29 ?

  3. 2-3 days ago there was a 24h window in which people talked about Wuhan quite openly and criticized the gov. Next day it closed. Now it's all 武汉加油 and stories of heroic doctors flying to help ... and people are buying it. Makes you realize what you're up against. Depressing.

  7. One thing overlooked so far is the number of extra deaths from non-virus causes owing to strain on hospitals. e.g. People who've died of heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc because they couldn't see a doctor or get their meds. There must have been a spike.

  8. The annual CCTV Spring Festival gala has a bit about the virus right now. Naturally, it's a propaganda piece about heroic sacrifice by doctors and how the challenge will be overcome, but still good to see it isn't being totally glossed over.

Just published this analysis piece on the potential economic impact of the novel in . We estimate it could cut real GDP growth in 2020 by 0.5-1 percentage points (from our baseline forecast of 5.9%):

  11. Economic impact is secondary to public health, but this virus is going to hit the Chinese economy hard. All those tickets unused, hotel rooms empty, trips cancelled and meals out called off ... that is a lot of money not being spent and it's not likely to change for some time.

  12. This is the time we are living in. An epidemic is underway and all this guy wants to talk about is alleged racist discourse. Maybe save that for the inquiry after its dealt with and focus on the actual problem at hand?

  13. I retweeted this as DOAM hid my reply from view in the original thread. They must have mistaken me for being pro-CCP.

  14. The “petrified” claim does your cause no favors. It’s hard to tell if he actually is and even if he is it could be for a number of reasons, including the fact he’s been asked to speak in front of the whole class. Plenty of kids wouldn’t enjoy that.

  16. 30 years ago today Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife got a Christmas present from the Romanian people. One day maybe Xi Jinping and his enablers will get a similar gift. Merry Christmas 2019!

  17. If it wasn't bad enough that China still allows animal circuses like this, now the animals are being starved to the point they need to eat each other. Here a tiger and a lioness attack a horse because they've not been fed since meat prices went up.

  20. How have we ended up back here? Public book burnings by the faithful are something from the 1930s. What is happening to China? Is this just the inevitable consequence of failing to teach your own history?
