Perhaps transit SHOULD be trying to be faster than driving? That seems like it would be a major motivator to get drivers to consider changing.

Transit should be as fast as possible but beating the car for speed might not be reasonable. But being quick, reliable, flexible while allowing multitasking or stress reduction while saving money (for the individual and society) is a pretty damn strong + achievable goal.

I read in about 1990, that if you consider the time spent at a desk working to earn $$ to pay for a car, fuel, insurance, upkeep, .... that your effective speed in the car is 5mph.

It's not a bad goal to chase however, in highly congested cities. We see places in Seattle that when transit is faster, that competes with people's relatively low marginal cost to drive (once you've sunk the purchase and insurance rates).

It should surely aspire to be faster though, right? In Munich, public transport is often comparable and faster than driving. Meanwhile in Dublin the Luas is painfully slow, which makes it hard to compete with private car for some routes.

Yeah if your grade separated train that isn’t in a freeway isn’t faster than a car doing the same trip something is probably wrong.

The old foxes of the Swedish school of public transportation planning say transit should win the speed game with the private car or at least play equal (1.5 travel time ratio)! If it is a network with direct lines and links a ring of suburban pearls/satellites, it is faster.

Transit can often be faster than driving at rush hour if it's built right. Why is making transit faster than driving a bad goal?
-
It's narrow-minded to think it's the only goal. I value the time I have bonding with my baby girl, and transit allows me that special time while a professional with a safety record that far beats the general population deals with the frustration of navigating around chaos.
