Only doing work you have a "passion" for is self-indulgent privilege. Work has dignity, and work done with the right spirit that provides for your needs and gives you time and resources to pursue passions is an excellent thing.

Absolutely. There is a dignity & deep satisfaction realising its not all about you. Being humble, loving & caring about something outside yourself is a wonderful gift. Focusing too much on yourself & your own fulfilment can be self defeating.

I'm okay having just a job and enjoying myself in the off hours. I suspect if you make your passion your work, it can start to feel like a job. I'd rather do what I enjoy when I want to and not because I have to.

Oh no honey! You are in the majority & should be proud. It's wonderful if someone can earn a living doing something they love but it's rare. The world needs grown ups who go to work and keep things running too :) Find the joy whenever you can and continue to appreciate your life

sometimes my future seems like an endless blank. i don’t love my job, but it pays so i can't leave. it upsets me; the idea that im slaving away my youth. i want a meaningful life, but i'm just a corporate slave. im devoid of passion for life & feeling more jaded everyday.
-
i know this is all privileged whining; i should be thankful my problems are purely existential and not material. but the future doesn’t look any less dull and gray. i live in nyc, one of the most exciting places on the planet, but i can’t seem to feel alive.

It's OK as long as you're not mentally tormented in you job. If it's a good atmosphere and the paycheck is promising, if you're at peace of mind, then it's all fine. But the second you feel disturbed and tormented in your job, that'd be about the time you have to quit it.

My passion is travel. It has nothing to do with my responsibilities. I personally like it better that way because I can explore different interests and have one that's purely about fun.

This sounded like me right after 9/11, when so many of us were reevaluating things. For me, adding volunteering for a cause i was passionate about took away the guilty feeling that i should be more passionate or fulfilled by my “job” and then i felt better about the balance.
