This is heartbreaking. I don't understand how we can legislate how many hours of sleep/off time truck drivers have - based on medical science - but deliberately push doctors and nurses past their limits. Who is served by this inhumane and medically unsound "tradition"?

There are limits on how many hours residents can work, it’s just not enforced or monitored. It’s a toxic work culture from the top down.

Why the hell are we forcing people responsible for important decisions to do so much on practically NO sleep?? When I go into surgery, or need help from the ER, I want my doctors and nurses to be well-rested and completely in charge of their mental faculties!

Same reason it's done in the military (ex. navy seals). It's about weeding out the weak, and providing the best possible.

We need to change our education system so we’re not killing empathy and enthusiasm because of how overworked our students are. This is just inhumane. It’s not even about raising good doctors, but good humans who still hold a passion for learning and creating a better world.

Sounds like a very toxic medical school. We were worked hard but I slept more than 3 hours a night except perhaps the week before finals and staying up to study was my choice. Call in 3rd year was 1 in 3 for 2 months, 1 in 4 for 4-5 and less for the rest. So sad this happens.

I just don’t understand who benefits from an over-tired doctor?!

Spoiler alert: residency is harder than medical school.
-
1) Medicine is hard. 2)Some specialties are even harder, and even harder still for some over others 2) Individuals who are rude or “mean” exist in every medium- from head Chefs in a restaurant to medical instructors. Shouldn’t have to be that way. 3) 3hrs is way too little sleep

Wow. This felt like a page out of my journal. The American medical education system needs to change. I never experienced depression and anxiety as painfully as I did in my first year. I confided in a few professors. What did they do? Hand me nursing school applications.
