I think as you grow older you'll realize that his history is also your history. It's not a bad thing. Passing on oral history is important, otherwise we lose our connection to the past. Talk to your dad about it, I'm sure you'll be surprised and glad you did it.

I totally agree...give it 10 years and you will want to know the history, understand the language, the culture, the food..because it’s cool to have 2 sides to you.

If his dad is a good dad, this is really sad. Imagine your child not wanting to know about your childhood...

Heritage is a gift and a burden. We get to recognise both at different stages in our lives. :)

Absolutely
- your parents heritage doesn’t define you. I’m a Croatian New Zealander - I love NZ, love the English language - but I look totally Croatian, I possibly didn’t like it when I was young...at 55 it feels cool and I accept all of me. Croatian food is better too

This kid needs to read the story of the girl from the Phillipines and the realization she had about her mom. And he should start talking to his dad about his life in Vietnam.

Lovely strategy; to be ‘an adjective’ , I’m going to try that today. You might find your connections more relevant later on, if you have children or move away.
