That's a great way to set up kids who are already under a lot of stress (being from underprivileged homes) for serious mental health issues. What happens if they don't pass that "make or break" assignment? Many would give up. Hopelessness is crushing.

There is not a single assignment that makes or breaks your life, not in medical school, not in high school, and sure as hell not in middle school. This is how you make kids grow up believing they aren’t good enough.

As a kid who grew up thinking these assignments would “make or break” me, I have to say this kind of teaching sucks. The stress of having to treat every single subject like they’re going to ruin my life if I failed really got to me. Instead of being motivated I felt anxious.

I was a middle school teacher for 9 yrs. I loved it what I learned from my students is that praise and kindness goes a long way especially in classes of predominantly underprivileged students.
