Hugo explains very well why Naval's idea (likely) won't work.
I think Naval also incorrectly assumes that developers are driven by monetary gains. You'll probably attract more, but not better ones.
IMO the best devs are driven by ideology and/or itch to scratch.https://twitter.com/hugohanoi/status/985073633419673600 …

My point here is that it’s hard to design such an incentive scheme in an unbiased & decentralized way. And impossible to embed into the protocol.

I also understand where you're coming from. For a certain group of people, beyond a certain point, money no longer serves as a motivator. This is true for the very very top people. They see money as a means to an end, and sometimes even a distraction.
-
But for the large portion of us, money *is* the greatest motivator, whether we like it or not. Even ideological people have to start somewhere, ie, survival, feeding their family etc. Only after they're financially well-off they can afford to think beyond money.

The main reason I want a high bitcoin price is mostly so that the top developers don't have to worry about being able to pay the bills. I am assuming that they have (enough) bitcoin though. It is far easier to pursue your ideals/dreams when you have the money for it.

Yeah there were quite a number of devs who got involved early & are now well-off, which is great. However, for every existing great Core Dev, there are potentially 10/100 equally talented ones out there who hesitate to contribute because they're "late" or more risk-averse.

Yep. There is a general funding problem you see throughout Open Source development. I think most do incredible and incredibly important work, yet they have to do it alongside
$job. https://www.coreinfrastructure.org/ came about when some realized the whole internet was dependent on it.
