Hey tweeps, what's the best resource on the fundamental/conceptual/economic problems with Proof-of-Stake? asking for a friend

Poelstra’s piece, the narayanan paper, @hugohanoi’s work, and most persuasively, @Truthcoin’s work.

you have to look externally for these critiques. those with a vested interest in designing these systems are, unsurprisingly, not very introspective. which is why there is a dearth of good criticism: it's hard to understand the complexity of PoS and few outsiders do.

I wonder why you say they are not very introspective. What I've learned is that the Ethereum PoS FAQ addresses many objections in a productive way—the responses are substantive and controvertible. (Not the new result from Narayanan et al yet, but hey it is very fresh.)

The FAQ's treatment's of Sztorc's argument is weak. The FAQ also doesn't address problems like PoS having lower churn in the validator set (mining being costly, staking being costless) or Brian Venturo's critiques of staking

Basically the FAQ optimizes for "PoS works because [economic formulae] and [additional complexity]" and fails at its central goal, which should be convincing outsiders. It preaches to insiders. PoS is a political and social issue, not just a software problem to be solved.

The problem that no PoS proponent has ever convincingly answered is as follows: why should a costless-to-exercise perpetual anti-dilution right be granted to the originators of an economic system?

ASICs depreciate, mining imposes costs (yes, MC approximates MR), and as a result miner strength waxes and wanes and new miners enter the validator set. However, staking is essentially costless. Thus whoever gets to originate the system can retain power perpetually

Have you read up on latest PoS specs? Staking is not costless. In Casper, for every 32 ETH you need to contribute a fixed amount of computing resources. There’s also opportunity costs. Plus, you can earn more stake by working.

This is why I have a hard time engaging with PoS! The specs are poorly communicated to outsiders and ever-changing. I do agree that one of the most important things to determine is whether stakers will consider oppo costs

PoS specs are poor & ever changing because to fix flaws, you need to keep on applying bandaids 😛 Although they often reduce to 2 main variants: checkpointing or accepting chain freeze. I see no new arguments here, @zooko is rehashing "weak subjectivity"https://twitter.com/hugohanoi/status/1045837760521588737 …

1/ “Weak subjectivity" strikes again. One thing Vitalik is good at is creating amazingly bad terminology. Some examples besides "weak subjectivity": "Bitcoin maximalism", "inactivity leaks” (which he erroneously likens to depreciation). https://twitter.com/zooko/status/1045808363974488064 …

Research and development is a continuous, iterative process. It’s not in production. Pray tell what “bandaids” have been applied. Seriously, you really need to do more research. I’m sure @drakefjustin or @dannyryan would be HAPPY to have an in depth discussion with you.
