Very well said! I find it hard to explain this nuance to newer members of the community.

It’s not intuitive
people tend to think of Bitcoin as just another normal software app - “just update it, what’s the big deal?!” But it is anything but normal & unlike 99.99% of software out there.

The truth, of course, is that we have sacrificed nothing. A bunch of snake-oil salesmen want you to buy their magic formula, but they have only placed a fancy label on dishwater.

The above statement applies not just to the event last year, but any features / upgrades in the future.

I don't get how you could have Bitcoin maximalism, belief that bitcoin will always be the dominant coin, while at the same time believing that bitcoin will never upgrade to catch up to better competing coins.
-
> better competing coins [citation needed]
-
Do you believe that bitcoin will never require an upgrade that breaks backward compatibility?
-
Bitcoin already requires at least 1 hardfork.
-
Which makes the "maximalists are all about backwards compatibility" seem very weird. I prefer "maximalists are about bitcoin being the most adaptable coin that will always dominate in the future"
-
No. Bitcoin must always comply to the implications I bought into. Hardforks are possible, but under very specific/extreme circumstances. Let's not be silly. Bitcoin's incentive structure doesn't need to change to remain dominant. Extra features increase the attack surface.
-
Interesting. I've heard that "Bitcoin most always comply to the implications I bought into" before. From
@rogerkver who complains that early adopters bought into "peer to peer cash" who's goal is to replace fiat and become the dominant global currency, and not "store of value" -
But this all has nothing to do with "maximalism." Bitcoin maximalism is belief that bitcoin will be the dominant crypto, and all others will die off or have their features assimilated. It was never about "bitcoin will never change" or "will always remain backwards compatible"
