Just as with FIBRE the “shift” is cosmetic, the power structure remains the same. In FIBRE the relay operator is assuming the power of the pool. In this thing the payout pool is assuming the power of a pool under a different name. But yes, what would a true “shift” even mean?

4/ Can you elaborate RE: latency? Traditional pools rely on one single getblocktemplate() service to divide the work between all miners. Eliminating this bottleneck at least gets rid of one type of latency.
-
5/ Bottom line is even if it’s possible to solve mining variance thru something like
#braidpool, it doesn’t mean we can’t pursue both approaches. Especially given that#braidpool is still highly experimental. -
Ignore
@evoskuil, he loves to throw shit on stuff by ignoring all the practical effects, and mostly not even bothering to do research. -
Now now kids, we can all get along.

Man this sure blew up

Not for me... shit-tons of tweets just disappeared :).

If you're mining in Venezuela because your government has its head up it's ass, you REALLY don't want to be authenticated. The system doesn't need authentication anyway. It's a crappy solution with bad externalities.
-
Unauthenticated on the user end != unauthenticated on the pool end. BetterHash adds authentication of pool messages so that a MITM can't trivially redirect your hashpower, but doesn't add user-level authentication (though I think your analysis is overblown).

TOFU is better than nothing. Poor Bitcoin carnivores...
-
TOFU largely solves the problem in the real world, without adding any changes to config or "real" authentication =D. Miners will (hopefully) notice if things don't work when devices are turned on, but will definitely not notice if things don't work a week later.
-
It reduces to a political solution of monitoring Reddit and Twitter for evidence of hanky panky, unfortunately. But again, is better than BGP attacks.
-
Well if you're being MITM'd there's nothing you can do automatically. Having your devices refuse to mine and fall back to solo mining when they detect MITM is way better than simply ignoring it. No Reddit needed, luckily :).

Authentication means identity, which means lack of anonymity, which is generally problematic. First identify the problem that needs to be solved.
-
No it doesn't. Please read the BIP and tell me where there is identity anywhere. Or, really, please read the BIP before you shit on it.
