    C. Hibbert on Elizabeth I: 'Rather than come to a decision she would spend weeks and months in argument and in protracted, useless diplomacy, hoping that difficult problems would resolve themselves - as often, indeed, they did - if left to do so.' AS OFTEN, INDEED, THEY DID

Just out of curiosity is this another instance where a queen is analysed on different terms to a king? I don't know but did all kings make decisions by contrast? And if they did use diplomacy like Elizabeth is it written about in the same way?

Exactly the point I was trying to make (just not clearly enough! 280 characters is sometimes too few...). Choosing not to act could be a decision in itself, or a way of defending a previous decision she was under pressure to change. Gender is shot through the entire discussion.

(I mean, gender shaped the whole nature of her interaction with her ministers, AND the way it’s then been written about by historians...)

Thank you for picking up on it! I’ve been wanting to do a thread on this whole passage from Hibbert but too behind with everything else... One day!

As a chippy Catholic Scouser I always mean to do something on the insufferable smugness of AG Dickens on the Reformation!

Maybe we should have tried the "seeing if it sorted itself out" and "diplomacy" a bit more before the rushed refendum on Brexit!😞

And what happened? She died without an heir and we ended up with the King of Scotland. From that logic ‘all hail Alex Salmond !!!’ Actually bring it on as I like him.

I’ve heard anecdotal evidence of twentieth century leaders being pathologically indecisive like this as well, Franco and Nasser being the main ones
