Wife and I have been working through Ken Burns's THE CIVIL WAR and it got me wondering about something

-
What are the theories for what would have happened if the Confederates *hadn't* fired on Fort Sumter?
-
Like, what if the Confederates seceded, but treated the Union troops as guests, gave 'em town passes, invited 'em to parties
-
Basically, draw things out, make 'em chill, so the anti-war faction in DC had a chance to really get active.
-
I dunno what would've happened, but it seems to me making the war go hot so soon was not in Confederates' best interests.
-
Bet opening up those guns on Fort Sumter felt really damn good, though. Most bad ideas do. They prob'ly got wistful, remembering it after.

*wakes up in cold sweat* "Why?! Why did I smash my 64' Telecaster on that stage?! We were a terrible band anyhow..."
