Here's the genome size of various Old World bats (black) and New World bats (gray) compared to the average for mammals. Bats have smaller genomes... and the Old World bats have completely lost their LINE1 junk DNA. Why? (5/n)

Conversely, just because a difference is to some extent socially constructed, that doesn't mean it can be eliminated entirely by changing social ideals.

Just because a difference has an underlying biological component, that doesn't mean the difference couldn't be significantly attenuated by changing social ideals. In the majority of cases, such attenuation will likely be possible to a considerable extent.

In general, socialization will amplify any slight natural separation between socially constructed categories that exists, because the categories have ideals and people modulate themselves towards those ideals.

This is a nice example of how many popular arguments about whether things are biologically determined vs. socially constructed are overly reductive. Both modes of causation may be operative!

Doing the Twitter thing where I post screenshots of extracts from interesting books I'm reading... This is Lieberman & Blumstein (1988), Speech Physiology, Speech Perception, and Acoustic Phonetics.

been trying for ages to articulate the peculiar experiential quality of programming as a job, this Tumblr post is probably my best attempt yet:

These mesmerising sandpipers almost vanish at times, as well as forming a boomerang shape. RT if you agree that nature is amazing and needs better protection!

Targeted advertising doesn't work. In fact, almost no algorithmic decision making works unless the problem it's solving is incredibly well defined and can be solved without reasoning about or otherwise understanding the world.

Revealed preferences are a pain in the you-know-what sometimes. Especially when it comes to culture.

I think programming isn't that hard in an absolute sense, but it is quite an unpleasant thing to do, and most people, quite sensibly, choose not to put in the effort to learn how to do it. It takes a peculiar kind of person, often somebody lacking in other options, to get into it

Possible definition of "work": work is an environment where everything is forbidden by default, and everything permitted is explicitly permitted. Play is an environment where everything is permitted by default, and everything forbidden is explicitly forbidden.

when people suggest a script for how you should say something, they *always* put a "Hey" at the start. Never any other interjection. It's one of those ubiquitous little linguistic mannerisms that people copy from each other.

Once again, I'm seeing a viral tweet quote-tweeted by a bunch of people on my timeline who are acting all knowing and smug about how bad it is, meanwhile I think the tweet is actually good.

tldr: Get tenure, or get rich. Software has not eaten R&D, and won’t eat it anytime soon. Possible outliers like Satoshi (who may have been in an R&D institution or indie-wealthy in 2009 for all we know) notwithstanding.
