There's a tonne wrong here. [1] The presumption that the state knows better than individuals on how to allocate their capital is an enormous fallacy. It's also the wrong pseudo-solution to Kenya's lack of savings.https://twitter.com/ledamalekina/status/1206528966128881665 …

The low savings problem is a combination of things, IMO. Earnings [which inflation has eroded steadily post 2013], instruments [although the likes of M-Shwari partially solved that] and eco-system. Can you save when you're essentially a family's rainy-day fund?

[2] This is a *tax*. To pretend it isn't is deeply dishonest policy making. In fact, by appropriating cash from citizens, the state's essentially robbing its citizens and taking on interest-free debt for itself. Given the state's track record of wasting billions, no thanks!

[3] The proposed "solution" ignores the facts of the Kenyan economy. More taxes aren't the solution. *Less* taxes, and a leaner, more efficient state, are. Let individuals decide how to allocate their capital and face the consequences thereof.

If we are not creating communities that support prosperity and tell people that wealth is when they become “better than their neighbours”, we are destroying communities and creating more poverty. Community creation comes from common belief. The gap is widening for that to happen.

The greatest open secret of prosperity is that it is a group thing. People don’t become rich all by themselves because they murdered someone or prayed for themselves alone. People become wealthy in a community that supports that wealth creation process. Check history and see.
