I am fearless in battle, and I am feared by my foes. I am loved by few, and hated by those I oppose. I am always heard, but never am I seen. For I am the internet warrior, and I hide behind my screen.

The second step in AA is “we came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” I sometimes fear that power greater than myself IS insanity. It lunges at me, pulls back and laughs, beckoning to come a little closer. I wouldn’t dare.

I went back to my old company. They gave me too much responsibility for my first day. I don’t know their systems anymore. Don’t they know I haven’t worked here in five years? What brought me back here? Was it the nostalgia? My alarm goes off. I open my eyes.

“ I’m moving to a small town, in a different state, change myself, do everything different and marry the first guy that’s nice to me, I mean really nice to me. That’s more appealing than returning to work Monday morning. Do you hear me ?”

“I don’t get these empaths. What’s that mean, they give to charity or something?” “I think like, they feel what you feel.” “I mean I can read people like a script. I can read what I think they feel, but doesn’t mean can I feel it.” “Can anyone? Really?”

I associate the song “Sultans of Swing” with the Oregon Coast. It was 2014. I was 29 years old and on the final road trip of my 20s. We passed through Astoria while it played on the radio. It seemed fitting. As if this moment were oil painted on a canvas, removed from time.

I had a dream last night in which I was stabbed several times by a pair of brothers I was having a conversation with. I didn’t want to fight them so I pretended I’d never been stabbed.

When I was a kid, my mom had a friend who was dying of breast cancer. She lived with her son in a brick apartment building across from the zoo. When we would go there, her son would give me comics. He was grown and likely had no interest in them. I wonder what happened to him.

The creativity and the dream are to be expunged to meet the demand of an offended, angry mob that wants no satisfaction. It takes a spine to tread these waters. It takes a flinch to be undone. Keep walking I say, for to give pause is to drown.

What would y’all do if you got canceled on Twitter? I’d probably get more work done.

What is everyone’s typical word count for short stories? Lately mine have been in the range of 1500-2000. The stories I’ve been writing lately just can’t seem to justify anything longer.

I was living in Seattle when this guy emerged from under the bridge that crossed over the rail yard. I thought about following him for awhile but he walked too slow so I took this picture, passed him, and headed to my bus stop.

I smile cuz my pockets are looking right now and it’s cuz some other chump’s pockets are lookin’ flat. My dude is chilling on the stoop and his pockets are bout to be tremendous. I’ll be a chump with flat pockets but I’ll be high as a kite. So it goes.

A man pushes a boulder uphill for an aeon and we call it madness. “What a horrid fate.” We say, while we scramble to stay relevant, a culture in quicksand.

He shoved a straw up his nose. I watched him snort white powder off his “Chronic 2001” CD case and I was curious. I didn’t do it that night, but I did it on another night just like it. I spent the next ten years chasing my curiosity. Never found it.

She showed me a book. I took a look at the cover and she told me, “One of my clients at the homeless shelter published this a long time ago. Cool, isn’t it?” A primordial dread crept. My appetite left me. “Yeah.”

I could do something great today, whatever that means. I could do nothing. I could be a hero, whatever that means. I think I’ll do nothing.

Existence is a coliseum. I’ve dodged the lions. I’ve stood atop the heaps of fallen foes, mine own blood intermingled with theirs. I’ve still yet to overcome my greatest adversary. The one that stares at me every sunrise. Taunting me from behind the mirror.
