I love words. I hate live tv. I'm afraid of floating off into space and/or the ocean and being lost forever. My name is Emily.

When you’re sick, wearing the sweatpants you slept in, and have crazy, wind blown hair but it’s about to be a snowstorm and you have to go to the store bc you’re out of food- guarantee you will run into multiple aquaintances you haven’t seen in like a decade. Thems the rules.

Josh said of his dad today that “his whole was centered around working other people’s land” From the cotton fields to SW OKC, that was Uncle Floyd. Laboring. Laying himself down. Not for the recognition or the reward. But for the harvest. May it be true of us. End/

A lot of us are so concerned about platform and position. To have an “impact”. But the impact I saw today at RVBC as we remembered Floyd was the far-reaching effects of quiet, faithful humility- of becoming all things to all people, that by all means some might be saved.

He was a faithful friend to my dad & many other pastors of his generation, the glue that held them together in many ways, and an encouraging mentor to countless younger ministers. All while laying himself down again and again for the people he pastored & the community he loved.

Floyd & Pam faithfully served the same church for 30+ years, raised amazing kids, and when they has earned their empty nest, adopted 3 little kids from foster care.

When the neighborhood became more Spanish-speaking, he gave away more of his place, preferences and position to hire Spanish-speaking pastors. RVBC had multi-cultural, bilingual worship and ministries decades before most in our circles had a thought about intentional diversity.

When another inner city church was on the verge of closing, Floyd invited them to merge with RVBC. He gave away a little of his place and preferences and position to join together with another body to advance the Gospel in his community.

Floyd was a good ol boy, cotton share-cropper from Arkansas. His life was radically changed by Jesus and he became a pastor in rural Arkansas/Eastern OK. 30 years ago that country boy moved to Rancho Village, an inner-city church in OKC.

Last Sunday our pastor taught from 1Cor 9. He talked about shaping ministry to reach our community. Later that day, my dad’s (and my) friend Floyd went home to Jesus. I’ve been thinking about Sunday all week. Because it was my Uncle Floyd who modeled this best of anyone I know.

One of my heroes in ministry passed away last week. He made me feel like the most important little girl in the world and a vital co-laborer in the gospel. A thread on what I learned from him: 1/

He already knows as a teenager- thanks mostly to some really good discipleship by other young men- things I didn’t see or understand until I was an adult. And thank God for that. End/

When we got in the car I thought I’d have to explain things about the context of to the 15yo. But he talked about systemic racism, whole-life pro-life ethic, and civil rights & criminal justice reform with knowledge and conviction. Better than me at his age. 6/

“The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned. We are all implicated when we allow other people to be mistreated.” “The power of mercy is that it belongs to the undeserving.” 5/

I can’t stop thinking about the lines at the end of the movie, during his testimony to Congress. I don’t know if it what’s in the real statement but I hope it is. 15yo said in the car about how what he said sounded like the Prophets and like the Gospels. He’s right. 4/

I knew the story from and Bryan Stevenson’s book but I was still shaking through the whole movie. Some of those images I will not shake. Nor should I. Man. 3/

Is Jaime Foxx ever not good? Man. I just. Man. And is phenomenal in this movie. Not a superhero. Just a dude doing the hard, impossible, right thing. Find a theater near you showing and go see it. If it’s not showing where you are, ask for it. 2/
