A coda from the trip: One highlight for me was getting to teach about Fernando III and Alfonso X in Seville's Capilla Real, where the quadrilingual tomb AX made for FIII is located (under a very Baroque embellishment). Surreptitious photo by a colleague.

The Risāla of Ibn Quraysh, who was a 10th century Hebrew grammarian born in Tiaret (Alegeria) and settled in Fez (Morocco). The text is often considered a pioneer of comparative Semitic linguistics—first printed in this Paris edition of 1857, in Judeo-Arabic with notes in Latin.

The problem with academia is that they want to hire “normal” poets but there are not a lot of “normal” poets. Sorry, you can’t have it both ways.

“Then I entered college where I discovered that all these years I’d been reading literature. It was at that moment, I think, that I began rereading, because from then on it was to the books that had become my intimates that I would turn and turn again.”

Rummaging through some old papers from grad school, I discover this important note to myself: "According to Ibn Qutayba, Ṭarafa ibn al-ʿAbd was the first great poet to mention scrotal hernias and diseased testicles in his poetry." Noted.

Currently engaged in a library recall war with someone over Wolfdietrich Fischer's "Grammatik des klassischen Arabisch". We keep recalling it back and forth from each other. This is how century-long feuds begin.

It turns out we were just as conflicted about seduction centuries ago as we are now. Depending on whom you ask and when, the seducer is either a manipulative villain or a heroic figure of sexual liberation.
