ppl also say "normalize" abt things which are societally already considered quite normal all the time and idgi. to normalize w/o changing the way all of society is is to assimilate

for a hypothetical example lets say "normalize cis women wearing makeup" is smth someone says. this is societally considered normal. in fact this is what society teaches, enforces, and expects of cis women. however it also punishes them for it...but thats misogyny

they arent being punished because they are doing something society considers "abnormal" or "wrong". they are being punished because they are women existing and this is how the makeup industry makes money. by encouraging makeup use and critiquing makeup use

so it doesnt need to be normalized. in fact the normalization of it is a part of the problem. so many cis women cant even stand how they look without a lot of makeup and are expected to spend a lot of money on an industry to look not-human to be fake respected by cis men

its definitely a lose lose situation. even if the makeup is truly just for herself (and many times it is!) society will always interpret it as her doing her basic duty to perform for cis men. punished either way. still not an "abnormal" thing to do in the eyes of society

the punishment either way is an aspect of a systemic form of power imbalances and marginalization and hatred. its misogyny, and its a problem, and its not good. but that doesnt mean its not normal for cis women to wear makeup. punished for "abnormality" is a whole different thing

"normalize" is not the critique you think it is. its also misused a lot. it doesnt mean theres no issue or you arent being unfairly punished, but sometimes things *are* normal, and the punishment is more complex than not being understood

the best way to try and figure out what is informing the mistreatment in a situation is looking at society as a whole and what the societal status quo is; not the status quo of your circles/friends/online communities. what does *society* consider normal down to the bare bones

okay but they mean two very different things so it doesnt actually communicate if they actually want that or not
