It is necessary for a number of reasons: keep participation permissionless, decentralized currency distribution, protect against attacks.

Mining is not a waste to the people who value the service that bitcoin miners provide to the network (securing transactions).

No, it really is a waste. It also has centralised mining in China where access to that much electricity can be obtained cheaply somehow.

e.g. it's not clear to me based on those resources how holochains prevent double-spending, sybil attacks, and DHT churn/spam.
