On this day in 1945, the Soviets liberated barely living prisoners in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Over 1.1 million people were murdered in Auschwitz, 1 million of whom were Jews. The Soviets also found storage facilities with 350,000 men’s suits, 837,000 women’s clothes & many more items

On this day in 1941, the Jewish underground in Vilna issued a partisan manifesto calling for resistance. The efforts focused on creating an underground Jewish fighting force and encouraging other Jews throughout Eastern Europe to stand up against Nazi Germany.

On this day in 1941, The ship "Struma" leaves Romania carrying 769 Jews but is later denied permission by British authorities to allow the passengers to disembark. In 1942 it sails back into the Black Sea where it is intercepted by a Russian torpedo & sunk as an enemy target.

On this day in 1941, in occupied Poland, near Lodz, Chelmno extermination camp becomes operational. Jews taken there are placed in mobile gas vans and driven to a burial place while carbon monoxide from the engine exhaust is fed into the sealed rear compartment, killing them.

On this day in 1941, 30,000 Riga (Latvia) Jews were arrested and shot in the Rumbula Forest. Over the next nine days, some 38,000 Jews were executed at Rumbula, including 28,000 Jews from the Riga ghetto & 10,000 from Germany, Austria, and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

On this day in 1945, the Nuremberg Trials began. These were the first trials to administer punishment using proper jurisprudence. People participating in a criminal organization, such as the Gestapo or the SS, was a crime against humanity. 12 defendants were sentenced to death.
