    the issue here is much larger than this specific interaction, and I don't want that to get lost. if you're an educator and you're moved by this, diversify your teaching staff and curriculum, and rethink how you assess productivity and value in your classroom

    today my CS professor verified my imposter syndrome by saying "you're a good student, but here at Harvard there are some really great and really talented students" when he said that memories of loneliness and exclusion within the department flooded my mind, and I started crying

    I had a professor tell me I need to fix my priorities because I spent a lot of time doing "non-engineering" work and wasn't in the lab as much as my classmates. Most of that "non-engineering" work was to improve diversity in STEM. After that semester, I changed my concentration.

    so to insinuate that I don't work as hard as other students because of my grade on one assignment is hurtful and irresponsible. I've long felt excluded in that department, because there is a dearth of both representation of and understanding for people with backgrounds like mine

    THIS! The most useful thing that teaching made me realize – if a person doesn’t understand my explanation, then I need a new way to explain the concept. Everybody thinks and learns differently, and no single model is better than others.

    1. I often think by writing code, 2. I write code pretty fast, 3. I prefer to think by prototyping, 4. Not everyone thinks the way I do 5. 💥 I wish I'd understood sooner the importance of communicating in a form others understand.

    Please don’t use “the _ guys” to refer to a team of people. I’ve heard “the Xcode guys” and “the Swift guys” so many times 🤦🏻‍♀️ Even if it‘s a team of all men, that team might (and should) eventually hire a non-man. Break that habit now!
