is published at the end of October in the US: a history less of Christianity than of what has made Christianity revolutionary & transformative over the course of its 2000 year existence. So not a small theme...

Outside the chapter house in Westminster Abbey, 2 qewals - Yazidi priests - make music of a kind I have not heard since I was in the holy Yazidi shrine of Lalish, in distant Kurdistan, 4 years ago...

  3. What is the current state of play with the ? Well, it seems to be in the balance. This post from spells out how, for all of us opposed to this monstrous desecration, there is all to play for.

  6. Fantastic that picked up on this thread, came over from the Commons & spoke (in Arabic!) to a brother & sister from Sinjar who were both enslaved, both only recently freed. Hoping this will be a cause for the new parliament...

  7. These are the survivors of slavery, of attempted genocide. What cause nobler for those of us who live in peace & security than that of a people who have suffered so greatly & remain in terrible danger even now?

  8. The song they sing is famous among the Yazidis: a Romeo & Juliet story of forbidden love between a Muslim boy & Yazidi girl. Obviously, it ends horribly.

  9. A choir of ten Yazidi girls - 5 of them former ISIS slaves, five who spent their childhood under the shadow of the ruin of their people. They look like teenagers off to Disneyworld or something- yet the things they have suffered. One was only rescued a few months back...

  10. We listen to a speaker from the Yazidi Spiritual Council talk about the antiquity of his people’s musical traditions - tracing them back to Sumerian times. (And indeed it is true that there do seem to be trace elements of ancient Mesopotamia in Lalish.)

  14. But for a thousand years & more in this country, it is Christianity that has overwhelmingly defined them. Having an oedipal attitude towards your father doesn't make him any the less your father.

  15. Honestly, humanism could not be a more Christ-less riff on Christianity if it tried. How Nietzsche - who always saw the English as peculiarly prone to this kind of self-deception- would have laughed!

If you think this is a losing strategy (with respect to British public opinion anyway) then you must believe that most people read the Terms and Conditions before clicking "Agree". We should do, of course. But most of us don't even read *explainers* about Terms and Conditions.

The plural of “moth” can be both “moths” and “moth”, but the latter sounds much more sinister: “Oxford is plagued by moth.”
