Article does notice the impressive gap between West and East Europe (+Greece and Portugal), but fails to mention vaccination (especially BCG) as a possible factor. Consider, former Eastern Germany had 3x less deaths per capita than Western Germany.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/05/why-has-eastern-europe-suffered-less-from-coronavirus-than-the-west …

Another article, same omission. And no, it's not West/South vs Central/East. It's West vs East, with exception of Portugal. Austria did do well, but not nearly as Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia, all neighboring countries.https://www.ft.com/content/f9850a8d-7323-4de5-93ed-9ecda7f6de1c …

It's not just me. "This week, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced it will donate A$10 million to help fund an Australian trial testing whether a very old vaccine, BCG, can be used against a new threat, COVID-19."https://theconversation.com/could-bcg-a-100-year-old-vaccine-for-tuberculosis-protect-against-coronavirus-138006 …

"...mandatory BCG was associated with a significantly slower climb in both confirmed cases and deaths... those w/o universal BCG vaccination, such as Italy, US, and Netherlands, were more severely affected..."https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/an-old-tb-vaccine-finds-new-life-in-coronavirus-trials-67504 …

Again, no mention of BCG. The stark reality of low covid deaths in a number of poorer countries (Eastern Europe plus Greece and Portugal) is conveniently explained away or simply ignored.https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/central-and-eastern-europeans-in-avant-garde-of-tackling-the-covid19-pandemic-66227/ …
