Close to how I feel about video conferencing in general, and mentoring encounters in particular. "It is not easy to express my anxiety about this new tool, and what it is doing to us. But I feel there is something subtly dehumanising about it."https://unherd.com/2020/05/how-zoom-takes-away-a-piece-of-our-souls/ …

What keeps you using video conferencing with mentoring vs. abandoning it all together?

Keep failing but getting better. Both sides lose out. Some couplings work, if having met before. Or, w proviso to periodically meet. Unless separated by ocean, commit to keep looking for reachable mentor(s). Won't always work out, but pressure must be there. Who prefers a screen?

yeah, no one prefers a screen :) I was just curious where you were at with video and mentoring. Sounds like you're not doing any video mentoring w/o also in person some times, intention to meet, or only temporarily until they find someone in person.

Yup. It's somewhat easier though when there's more than one mentor. But sharing tacit time and space, friction & sync, remains the game.

Oh, there's a host of reasons why one would *prefer* a screen or think it's the same, none good. Apart from sheer practicality or convenience.

Right. I assumed that was what you were saying in your rhetorical question of 'who prefers a screen?' :)

Really, I agree. Though I don't have quite the reaction to the truth of that that I see some folks having right now, partly because it's very old news to me, and partly given I have experienced a lot of real obstacles finding the in person opportunities.

Undrestood. It's amazing in a way, not to be underplayed, but comes at a price. It's essential to not be assimilated. #borg
